The Teen Parent Program provides support and counselling
services to the young mothers who attend Balfour Special
Tutorial, a school program for pregnant and parenting
teens. Each semester approximately 100 students who
range in age from 13 to 21, enroll in the program.
The majority of students at Balfour live on their own with little or no parental support and guidance. Nearly all of them have experienced significant school failure, and many of them are returning to school after being out for a year or two. Difficulties with boyfriend abuse, finances, parenting skills, drug and alcohol dependence, depression, and relationships with their own parents are common barriers to a successful school experience. A significant number are dealing with the after affects of the emotional, sexual, and physical abuse they suffered as children. Services provided to the students include individual support and counselling, referrals to other agencies, co-ordination of a Christmas hamper program, distributing donations of diapers, food and clothing, providing assistance with income tax forms, and parenting support group for those who wish to attend. For more information, contact The Teen Parent Coordinator at 523-3217. To download and view our program brochure click here. |
